Typhoon Angela, known in the Philippines as Rosing, crossed the country at Category 5 strength in November 1995. Communities in Bicol, southern Luzon and Metro Manila faced destructive winds, floods and widespread power failures.

STORM HISTORY
A westward approach
Angela developed from a disturbance near the Marshall Islands and a monsoon trough in late October. It moved west, became a typhoon on October 28 and intensified into a super typhoon around the turn of the month. The archive records peak one-minute winds of 155 kt on November 1 and a minimum central pressure of 910 hPa.
The typhoon weakened before reaching the Philippines on November 2 but retained Category 5 intensity. After crossing the country, Angela moved west-northwest over the South China Sea. Increasing upper-level winds contributed to its dissipation over the Gulf of Tonkin on November 7.
Floods, landslides and power failures
Angela destroyed more than 96,000 houses and damaged bridges and roads. Bicol suffered some of the worst effects, while Catanduanes and Metro Manila also sustained major damage. In Calauag, storm surge and flooding associated with a dam failure killed 121 people. Mudslides killed more than 100 people in nearby Paracale.
Power failures affected about one-third of the Philippines. The recorded overall death toll was 936. After the disaster, PAGASA retired the local name Rosing and replaced it with Rening.
